Obama is a progressive with moderate tendencies that will help him govern and get things done. He is certainly a "liberal" in the ways that matter most -- for instance, he will appoint nominees to the supreme court who support a woman's right to choose. Without Obama as president, Roe will be overturned, and states will outlaw, even criminalize abortion. This is not hyperbole, it's fact. I don't like labels -- I get the sense Obama doesn't either -- which is partly why he defies easy labelling. I am glad Obama has embraced the other side where he has agreed with them, and hope to see much more of it if and when he is elected.

You remind me that Obama is no liberal. I hope my young, idealistic relatives (you and my son) will not be too disappointed when he turns out to be middle of the road, not liberal. Of course, Hillary wasn't a liberal either, but I have resigned myself to the reality that I won't get a candidate liberal enough for me (Wellstone is dead and Feingold didn't run). So I support...as enthusiastically as I can...Senator Obama. Gobama.

I hope to read the article and appreciate your summary.

I can feel no sympathy thowards McCain, other than for having felt the pressures of having been his father's son and not having had his father's gifts.

He shifts with the wind and lacks a core to create a narrative. Even as his self-defined Maverick, he is defined by opposition to an other and not by standing for something. He lacks that thing down deep that binds one to one's values. I believe he devoutly wants to have it and believes that he exhibits it, but it is the pretender's exhibition. He lacks the integration that defines integrity. That is his flaw.. and also why he'll never understand why his opponents honestly view him as wrong. Loyal
